The name is official and was approved at the June 23, 2009 meeting!

Our Vision, "to provide a community home-repair resource in Graham County that considers health, safety and residential needs for the citizens of Graham County," is a work in progress.  It is our desire to identify individuals who need assistance with home repairs.  Some will need labor volunteers and others will need both labor and cost of materials to complete repairs.

Thus far, the following subcommittees have been identified:

  • Eligibility criteria
  • Volunteer pool
  • Administrative coordination
  • Matching of job skills
  • Partnership & Outreach
  • Advertising & Public Relations

We are looking for more members and hands-on volunteers for these and other committees.

Some members met with Etter Financial Services on Tuesday, July 14th to begin the 'legal' structuring of the organization and to discuss available grants to help fund the project.

We have been greatly encouraged by the broad spectrum of individuals at our first two meetings.  We have over 30 people committed to the project and are forming coalitions with SEACUS, Tribal Housing, and other community resources.  There has been a great sharing of ideas and commitments to make Helping Hands for Graham County a reality.

We invite any and all who would like to be a part of this community-based group to attend our next meeting on Tuesday, August 4th, at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m.  Please contact Barbara Haralson (bharalson@cableone.net) if you have any questions. Hope to see you at our next meeting!
